Reader's letter: Off-road park idea must be stopped
(Regarding a proposed 100-acre off-road vehicle park for Yucca Valley): Is no one as concerned as we are about this proposal? We have seen NO letters to the editor regarding this abomination since the article appeared on the front page July 17.
We defeated a similar measure in Flamingo Heights just a few months ago. In that instance, the developers were attempting a motor cross competition park, which from what I can see is exactly what they are working up to on this proposal.
This "conservative estimate for first year gate fees of $60,000" would provide the town with a possible gain of only $6,000 (10 percent of initial gate fees).
Is this small pittance to the town worth the environmental degradations that this park will create? To the conservative figure of "3,000 to 3,500 riders" you have to add family members, sport fans, catering or food service, trucks, trailers, SUVs and everything and everyone else that seems to arrive when these parks are implemented.
Does no one care but us about the increased dust? Noise? Air pollutants? Trash? Day and night stadium lighting? Loud speakers? Loss of habitat? Not to mention the most important issue, which is increased traffic on highways 62 (two lanes each way) and 247 (one lane each way). This park will be only 5 minutes north of the town proper.
Please wake up people. Even those that feel they are NIMBY immune to this park will be affected by it. Please write your town council members before a study committee is implemented at additional expense and get this horrid idea dropped.
After all, Johnson Valley north of us was already designated as an off-road vehicle area.
