Reader's letter: Writer trivializes ORV problem
In response to Mr. Chris Hutchins' recent editorial, I can only say that it is Mr. Hutchins who is largely in the wrong, and not Mr. Klasky. Phil Klasky is advocating for the rights and well-being of hundreds of Morongo Basin households besieged by lawless and unregulated off-road activity, not just himself.
Mr. Hutchins trivializes the growing magnitude of the problem. Had he attended the "Desert Communities Under Siege" conference in Joshua Tree, he would have learned that "good, honest, law-abiding community members" have been driven from their local homes by out-of-control off-road activity, with scores more on the verge of departing.
Where I come from, honest law-abiding Americans being driven from their homes by outlaw activity is not a trivial matter.
If Mr. Hutchins is really an advocate for safe, law-abiding, responsible riders and if he takes the time to research the position Phil Klasky advocates from, he will learn that he has no grounds for criticism. Mr. Hutchins' time would be far more productively spent in assisting Community ORV Watch and the Alliance for Responsible Recreation in forging a solution that will benefit riders and besieged community members alike.
