Reader's letter: OHV fans should patrol themselves
July 21, I attended the Joshua Tree MAC meeting at which they discussed the draft OHV ordinance for San Bernardino County. It is an ordinance that would empower code enforcement to assist the sheriff's dept. in their effort to arrest and prosecute illegal off-road riders.
There was a large turn-out of citizens from both sides of this issue. The one issue everyone seemed to agree on is that illegal off-roading in the Morongo Basin is a serious problem. The riders, while recognizing the problem, are apposed to the draft ordinance. Yet, they have no suggestions for a solution to this problem, besides more law enforcement.
One speaker mentioned that the use of OHVs by the children was better than having them become delinquents hanging out on a street corner. My question is, How does allowing your children to destroy my private property and my neighbors' private property teach them to be law abiding?
I would challenge the OVH riders to become proactive and organize into volunteer groups and on a regular basis, patrol the most abused areas in the basin. I'm sure that a friendly chat from a fellow OHV rider about the law would be more effective than from an ordinary citizen like myself.
