Published: Wednesday, November 16, 2005 1:43 AM CST
IRAQ - Two Marines from the Twentynine Palms base were killed in action Saturday during combat in Al Amiriyah, a district on the western edge of Baghdad.

According to base officials, the Marines' vehicle was attacked with an improvised explosive device, a military term for the homemade bombs insurgents and terrorists use in Middle East warfare.

Lance Cpl. David A Mendez Ruiz and Lance Cpl. Scott A. Zubowski, both 20, were killed in the explosion.

Both were assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment.

They were deployed to Iraq in September, Mendez Ruiz as an assistant gunner and Zubowski as an assaultman.

Mendez Ruiz was born May 26, 1985, in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

He moved to the United States when he was 6 years old and grew up in the Cleveland area. He joined the Marine Corps in June 2003.

This was his second deployment to Iraq.

His personal awards include the Combat Action Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the War on Terrorism Service Medal and two Sea Service Deployment Ribbons.

Mendez Ruiz is survived by his parents, Maximilliano and Miriam Mendez Ruiz of Cleveland, Ohio.

Zubowski, was born March 15, 1985, in Dyersville, Iowa. He joined the Marine Corps in June 2003.

Zubowski's personal awards include the National Defense Service Medal, the War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, two awards of the War on Terrorism Service Medal and two Sea Service Deployment Ribbons.

Zubowski is survived by his wife, Klancey, of Twentynine Palms.

His father, Richard Zubowski, lives in North Manchester, Ind., and his mother, Barbara Weitzel, resides in New Castle, Ind.
