SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY- In San Bernardino County law enforcement agencies have seized 17,281 marijuana plants this year, part of the state's record-breaking seizure of more than 1.1 million plants worth more than $4.5 billion, according to a news release from Attorney General Bill Lockyer's office.
“This season, Campaign Against Marijuana Planting conducted 237 raids in 31 counties during the traditional growing season, which runs from late July through early October,” stated Lockyer.
During the raids officers made 42 arrests and seized 76 weapons.
So far this year, 73 percent of the seized illegal marijuana was located on public land, including state and national parks and forests, the attorney general reported.
In the Morongo Basin, California Highway Patrol officers seized over 200 marijuana plants in 2005. The street value of the plants was estimated at over $1 million, said CHP Officer Andy Williams.
The CHP had the help of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.
The sheriff's Morongo Basin narcotics division was unable to provide the number of marijuana plants officers have seized by press time Tuesday.
