Fire hazards prompt trail closure

SAN BERNARDINO NATIONAL FOREST - Damage caused by the Millard and Sawtooth Complex fires and concerns for public safety has prompted the Bureau of Land Management to close the Pacific Crest Trail from the Cottonwood Trail head on the north side of Interstate 10 to the San Bernardino National Forest boundary.

The trail will be closed until the BLM determines the area is safe for visitors and hikers. Tape barriers have been put up to help the public identify the closed segment of the trail.

Call agency for disaster assistance

JOSHUA TREE - The Morongo Basin Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering an outreach program from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through the end of the week to help people who suffered losses as a result of the Sawtooth Complex Fire.

People with disaster-related needs should call 366-5330 to make an appointment to meet with a Red Cross caseworker in their neighborhood or another convenient location.

John Benefield, volunteer disaster director of the Morongo Basin Red Cross, said the Red Cross can help people meet a number of types of disaster-related needs. Examples, based upon qualifications, may include assistance in housing, clothing, groceries, bedding and critical medications.

Since the outbreak of the Sawtooth Complex Fire, Red Cross volunteers have been working to provide relief for affected families and individuals. The Red Cross opened a shelter at the Yucca Valley High School which has served as emergency housing for about 200 people. The shelter will remain open as long as needed.

The Red Cross has also served approximately 6,000 meals and snacks to fire-affected families and disaster workers.

All American Red Cross disaster relief is free.

Scammers may target victims

YUCCA VALLEY - During times of crisis, such as the Sawtooth and Millard fires, unscrupulous and unlicensed contractors can appear to take advantage of people already dealing with the trauma of losing their homes, the Yucca Valley Chamber of Commerce warns.

Homeowners can pick up a copy of “After a Disaster, Don't Get Scammed,” provided by the California State License Board, at the chamber office, inside the California Welcome Center in Yucca Valley.

To check on a contractor's license, go to www.cslb.ca.gov or call Cheryl at the Yucca Valley Chamber of Commerce at 365-6323.

Number links fire victims, services

MORONGO BASIN - San Bernardino County has created a toll-free number to provide service information to victims of the Sawtooth Complex and Millard fires and all residents of the fire-affected areas.

The number is (800) 398-9931.

It has been established to link victims with the various services available from the county and other relief agencies.

“We will keep the number active seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until the current crisis is under control,” said County Administrative Officer Mark Uffer.

The number connects callers with a live operator able to give them referral numbers to the services specific to their needs.

Miss Yucca: Bottle the flames

YUCCA VALLEY - Miss Yucca Valley and her court are asking Morongo Basin residents to donate recyclable bottles and cans to either Yucca Valley Del Taco restaurants.

All the money raised will help people affected by the Sawtooth Complex Fire.

The fund-raiser will proceed through July and August.

For information, call Dr. Sheldon Hough's office at 365-6609.
