Jasmine Smith, 10, to play in Junior Olympics
LANDERS — Jasmine Smith, 10, will compete in the 2008 USA Junior Olympic Tennis Skills National Finals, July 24 through July 26, at Chicago, Ill.
She’s one of 72 athletes, ages 8 to 13, who will compete in the National Finals in tennis, soccer, basketball and track and field.
Smith was a local champion from the Morongo Basin Tennis Association and was a gold medal winner at the Junior Olympic Regional Competition which took place in Riverside June 7.
Smith played Junior Team Tennis for Landers in 2007 and for the Joshua Tree “Mighty Turtles” in 2008.
During the fall of 2007, Smith was selected by the Southern California Tennis Association as a Future Tennis Champion and awarded a scholarship of $150 to be applied toward USTA sanctioned tournament entry fees, equipment and instruction.
She is a sixth-grade student at Landers Elementary School.
Smith has won an all-expense-paid trip for herself and her stepfather, Mark Williams, to the competition.
The opening ceremony will be at Soldier Field.
During the trip the athletes will attend a Chicago Cubs/Florida Marlins game.
“This is a very big deal,” said Gideon Smith, president of the Morongo Basin Tennis Association. “Jasmine will represent the entire western region of the United States in tennis competition among girls ages 10 and 11.”
