The Hi-Desert Star’s View: Green Path meeting a must for everyone
This Saturday will offer the long-awaited chance to question at least a few of the people who are behind the Green Path North proposal to build a corridor of high-voltage power lines that could run through the Hi-Desert. We encourage everyone who lives in the Morongo Basin to take full advantage of this opportunity.
Whether you put yourself in the for, against or neutral camp, this is your chance to hear what the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and its partners have to say about a project that, if it comes to fruition, could effect profound changes in the Hi-Desert.
For more than a year, local opponents have questioned why a line of towers would be sent through private property and protected wildlands in the Hi-Desert. They have asked why local officials or property owners were never notified of the plans. And the only representatives from the DWP to come to the Morongo Basin have been survey crews landing in helicopters, leaving property owners fearing their land could be seized.
Our hope is that Saturday, the DWP and its partners will send its decision-makers, people who have clout with their agencies, to the community meeting. We hope they will get there early to see the thought and determination that is behind the opposition to Green Path, as the California Desert Coalition hosts refreshments and a poster contest at 9 a.m. in the gym.
Saturday will be our first chance to meet face-to-face with the people who have the answers. It will be their first chance to meet the people whose communities they propose to use. It would be foolish for any of us or them to squander that opportunity.
