17 years of water found under district

YUCCA VALLEY — At least a 17-year supply of water is available under the Hi-Desert Water District, hydrologists from the U.S. Geological Survey told directors at a board meeting Wednesday.
The reserve could last as many as 40 years, “Depending on the amount of water available in the mid aquifer that can be safely extracted, and the result of studies in the eastern basins,” water district General Manager Ed Muzik added.
The USGS estimate is based on current usage of just under 10,000 active services consuming about 3,000 acre feet per year.
In recent years, Hi-Desert Water District has been purchasing about 4,300 acre feet of water annually from Northern California through the State Water Project and adding the water to native reserves through percolation into the aquifer.
In other board actions at Wednesday’s meeting, directors approved a new job position for an information technology manager in a salary range of $58,076 to $75,499.
Directors reviewed board policies for meetings and rules of order, director compensation and elections but sufficient questions and suggestions for minor changes were made that the item was tabled for a future agenda.
