Milling Around: A review of fall’s finest

The fall sports season has come to a close at Yucca Valley and Joshua Springs Christian high schools.
There were no CIF champions, either teams or individuals, at either of the Yucca Valley high schools this season.
Lightning football 2nd in CIF Div. 8
The Lightning eight-man football team came close to a team championship in CIF 8-man Division 2, reaching the finals where they lost to Desert Chapel of Palm Springs, 48-20.
Among the things that clicked this season for the Lightning was the superb running of senior Cole Roberts, Coach Jackie Roberts’ final football-playing son attending Joshua Springs.
Cole Roberts was a beast regardless of painful injuries that would have placed most of us in chairs along the sidelines. As the season neared an end, Roberts suffered a broken left wrist. Still he kept playing.
In the opening CIF game, Roberts scored the last TD for the Lightning Dec. 5. Along the way to the final buzzer, Cole led his team with 146 yards gained in 33 carries and 5 pass catches for 51 yards.
There can be little doubt in our mind Cole Roberts will be the Hi-Desert Star’s selection as MVP Lightning Football Player of 2008.
Before leaving the topic of “jobs well done,” Tyler Carlisle scored twice for Joshua Springs in the CIF title game and ran for 39 yards in 5 carries. He also caught 3 passes for 39 yards. And quarterback Zack Ontiveros gave his principal dad, Fem, reason to smile with 8 carries for 26 yards. He also was 13-for-25 in passing for 211 yards. He had one pass intercepted.
Others doing well in the CIF 8-man finals were Denzell Dobbins, 2 catches for 68 yards, and Josh Leichtner, 3 catches for 53 yards.
Trojan football ties for 1st in league
The Trojans won their CIF East Valley Division playoff series opener Nov. 21, defeating Bishop, 28-9, but in the East Valley Division quarterfinals Nov. 28, they lost to St. Margaret’s of San Juan Capistrano, 17-6. St. Margaret’s, undefeated in now 44 games over many years, went on to defeat Twentynine Palms in the semifinals, 17-3, then routed Hamilton in the finals. A point of interest: Yucca Valley and Twentynine Palms tied for first place in the De Anza League this year.
As you can see, the real football playoff games for St. Margaret’s were against the Trojans and Wildcats; the finals game was a vacation in Hawaii for the CIF Small Schools Division champion.
In looking to our choice as MVP Trojan Football Player of 2008, once again we look to the team’s quarterback, this time senior Xavier Siddall, who was 11-for-14 in passing for 138 yards against Bishop. He also carried 8 times for 23 yards. In the quarterfinals game against St. Margaret’s, Siddall completed 8 passes for 93 yards and 1 touchdown.
Other Trojans under consideration were Jeremy Lehmann, Brandon Willis and Rex Anderson, who can catch passes and return kickoffs and punts. Lehmann and Willis each caught two TD aerials from Siddall during the Bishop win. In the St. Margaret’s loss, Willis carried 8 times for 50 yards and Anderson caught 1 pass for 25 yards and the lone Trojan TD against St. Margaret’s.
On the defensive side of the ball, James Batin had 10 tackles and 1 sack against Bishop and 15 tackles and 1 sack against St. Margaret’s. For the season, James Batin turned in 135 tackles and 7 sacks. A very solid season!
Brett Lee also turned in a solid defensive season, and in the game against St. Margaret’s he caught 2 passes for 33 yards.
Two stars for Lady Trojan volleyball
Here there was a tie for the Star’s selection for most valuable girls volleyball player this season.
Our choices for MVP were Kai-lee Rhodes, who was the Lady Trojans offensive MVP, All-De Anza League first team and captain’s award winner.
As for our other choice, it would have to be Erica Hall, the Trojans’ MVP on defense, the Star’s choice for best impact with the floor player, captain’s award, All-De-Anza League first team and Most Inspirational Player.
In fact, should Oprah retire, our selection for a replacement would be Erica. We can think of no one who could better interview Tom Hanks while still competing in a volleyball match with a CIF championship on the line.
Wilson tops in Lightning volleyball
Senior Emily Wilson was the 2008 selection as Hi-Desert Star Volleyball Player of the Year.
Wilson was chosen All-Agape League first team and led the Lady Lightning in kills and blocked shots.
Lady Trojan tennis’ Pasinos is aces
Yucca Valley High School’s shining star in singles play, Alyssa Pasinos, put the school on the map when she advanced to CIF singles play at the Claremont Club Nov. 22.
Although the playoff competition was exciting against Serrano High School’s Alexis Vinis, Pasinos lost the first game, 3-6, and the second game, 3-6, to be eliminated from CIF singles competition.
Coach Cindy Miller said the games were tough and crowd-pleasing, “with a lot of deuces.”
Of the first game, Miller said of Pasinos, “She worked really hard.” Of the second game, Miller said, “This was a great match to watch.”
Within her nomination to the Hi-Desert Star of Pasinos, Miller said, “Pasinos’ record this season was 23-1; she was MVP in singles for the De Anza League.”
Miller also nominated Elizabeth Ficara and Shelby O’Brien to be the Star’s Athletes of the sport of tennis. “They were 22-2 on the year and were co-MVP in doubles for the De Anza League.
