AARP volunteers will prepare, file taxes for free
MORONGO BASIN — Through the Morongo Basin TaxAide Program sponsored by AARP, volunteer tax counselors provide free tax preparation for the elderly and low- to middle-income taxpayers. The Tax-Aide volunteer service will serve the community during the upcoming tax season.
The Yucca Valley site will be at St. Mary of the Valley Church at 7495 Church Street in Yucca Valley. From Feb. 2 through April 15, the site will be open Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
For appointments, call 365-3355 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.
The Twentynine Palms site located in the Twentynine Palms library will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Friday from Feb. 6 through April 10. The volunteers work by appointment only.
To make an appointment, call the Yucca Valley site at 365-3355.
Unlike in previous years, volunteer tax preparation will not be offered at PFF Bank and Trust.
Tax clients must bring their prior year’s tax return (form 1040 for 2007), Social Security cards for themselves and their dependents and tax documents pertaining to tax year 2008.
Couples filing jointly should both be present to sign authorization forms if at all possible. The person making the appointment should say at that time if his or her spouse will not be able to get to the site.
The Internal Revenue Service requires the volunteers file tax returns electronically.
People who are elderly or disabled and not able to drive to the tax site may be able to arrange transportation through Reach Out Morongo Basin. To make arrangements, call Reach Out Morongo Basin at 361-1410.
Church Street, where St. Mary of the Valley is located, is on a regular Morongo Basin Transit Authority bus route. In prior years, bus drivers have been willing to stop and let clients off at the tax-preparation site. Prior arrangements may be necessary.
