MORONGO VALLEY — Big Morongo Canyon Preserve will join the Morongo Valley Chamber of Commerce to celebrate the arrival of spring with the Morongo Valley Spring Festival 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 29 at Big Morongo Canyon Preserve and Covington Park.
The all-day event that begins with a Morongo Valley Firefighters Auxiliary pancake breakfast between 8 and 11 a.m. at Covington Park.
At 8 and 9:45 a.m., bird enthusiasts will walk the trails of the preserve and Covington Park, comprising one of the finest birding locations in the world.
Hikers will be treated to a view of the preserve and surrounding area with interpretive nature hikes. A spring flower walk is scheduled for 9 a.m. and a bird nest walk will begin at 1 p.m. For a more casual walk, join in guided walks along the Marsh Trail.
Live presentations will be offered at the preserve’s Education Center and the Covington Park Pavilion. Greg Hill of the Bureau of Land Management will present a history of the wilderness and Mike Smiley will talk about the wide variety of reptiles and amphibians that make the Morongo Basin their home.
Visitors will be treated to music throughout the day as they stop at the numerous displays and demonstrations.
The preserve’s junior docent trainees will display some of their work and will be joined by the Coachella Valley Bird Center, the Hi-Desert Nature Museum, Morongo Valley Art Colony, county waste management, Master Composters, Golden State Water, Morongo Valley Explorers Post No. 461 and more.
Mother Nature and Smokey Bear will be on hand to talk with children.
There will be lunch, desert gardening information and face painting for children.
Kids can discover desert animals, enjoy games, get creative with crafts or enjoy a special storytelling at the Children’s Library.
Big Morongo Canyon Preserve is at 11055 East Drive in Morongo Valley, and Covington Park adjoins the preserve at 50100 Park Avenue. For information, call 363-6454 or 363-7190.
