Pony Express rides again, and you can take part

Bud "John Henry" Hurn, President of the Mane Street Stampede, delivering the mail in Pioneertown.

PIONEERTOWN — A Pony Express rider will deliver mail to the Pioneertown Post Office with a horseback ride down Mane Street May 25.

The ride is part of the 68th annual Grubstake Days celebration.

Anyone may choose a free desert postcard from the Yucca Valley Chamber of Commerce office to be carried by the rider. The office is open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday in the California Welcome Center at 56711 Twentynine Palms Highway in Yucca Valley.

Select your postcards by May 23 to participate.

Members of the Mane Street Stampede Wild West Show and the Yucca Valley Equestrian Center will pick up the cards at the chamber office and ride their horses to Pioneertown, where will go down Mane Street to arrive at the post office at 2 p.m.

The public is invited to see the show and take part in a brownie bake-off. The event will also include a sale of souvenir historical pictures by the Friends of Pioneertown. Hot dogs and snacks will be offered for sale.

A souvenir cancellation stamp will be used on all mail at the Pioneertown Post Office during May, so everyone is invited to take their mail to the Mane Street post office to send family and friends a postcard or letter with the one-of-a-kind cancellation stamp.

For information, call (760) 365-6323.

Horses were used like machines and routinely died during the Pony Express. This method of mail delivery was inefficient and new and better ways were implemented. , The rodeo that is also part of grubstake days is blatant animal abuse. Animal abuse marketed as "historical "or "traditional" is clearly wrong.
