YUCCA VALLEY — A portion of the Landers Landfill was engulfed in flames at around 5:30 p.m. Monday, and continued to burn at 6:30 p.m.

Two county fire trucks and a water tender were on scene and firefighters were fighting the fire with hand crews and hoses.

A plume of black smoke could be seen from Old Woman Springs Road and Buena Vista Drive, towering into the air above Landers.

The smoke turned white as firefighters began to douse the blaze.

Because the landfill is worked regularly, there is a large area around the burn that is void of vegetation.

According to firefighters on scene, the trash fire posed no immediate danger to the surrounding areas.

The Landers Landfill is just east of Avalon Ave. on Winters Road. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
