YUCCA VALLEY — One man died in a head-on collision that injured three others, including a child, around 1 p.m. Saturday on Yucca Mesa Road near Douglas Lane.
According to a news release from the Sheriff’s Department, 25-year-old Megan Nemecheck, of Yucca Valley, was driving a red Subaru Impreza south on Yucca Mesa Road when she crossed over the double-yellow line and struck a gray Nissan Versa traveling north.
Nemecheck told witnesses she was having mechanical issues, which caused her to lose control.
The northbound Versa rolled over into the desert east of Yucca Mesa Road.
The driver of the vehicle, 72-year-old Michael Faulkner of Costa Mesa, suffered major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by San Bernardino County firefighters.
A passenger, Jacob Faulkner, 40, of Landers, was trapped in the car and had to be rescued by firefighters. He was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries.
A child was riding in the car with Nemecheck. The sheriff’s news release stated he was not injured, however, comments the child’s father made on the Star’s Facebook page indicate he was hurt. Nemecheck and the child were both flown to Loma Linda University.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department's Major Accident Ivestigation Team is investigating the accident.
