Solstice festival celebrates summertime

Dario Guerra and Jima Reed of Joshua Tree Brewery participate in the Solstice Fest on Saturday, June 22 in Landers.

LANDERS — The Morongo Basin community celebrated the summer solstice Saturday at a festival with craft beers, live music and big pizza slices baked to order.

After the solstice, the days begin to shorten as the sun moves from its highest point in the sky.

Essentially, the clock is inching it way back toward fall again, but on Saturday it was a celebration of all things summertime.

The Summer Solstice Fest was sponsored by the Homestead Valley Community Council at Homestead Valley Park in Landers. The council is trying to raise enough money to purchase a projector for the use of speakers at its meetings.

The festival offered pizza slices and craft beers along with other ice-cold thirst quenchers for the hot summer day. Local brewers demonstrated how they make their drinks.

“We’re showing different ways to make beer,” said Dario Guerra of Joshua Tree Brewery

The members of the Mojave Desert Brewers Guild have raised nearly $20,000 for the local community with donated beer, said Toby Gramm, the club’s vice president.

“We’re trying to get new members,” he said.

The Homestead Valley Community Council is the association of the unincorporated communities of Landers, Flamingo Heights, Yucca Mesa and Johnson Valley.
