YUCCA VALLEY — Cub Scout Pack 903 held its annual Pinewood Derby at the Yucca Valley Senior Center Saturday in spite of a wind storm. The scouts came to race their homemade mini roadsters in a double-elimination tournament where the cars with the top three times received trophies.
“Cub scouts take a block of wood, nails and wheels and carve them out,” Brian Drummond, parent and scorekeeper, said.
The winner was Eric Drummond, racing his car named Bug Eye. “I focused on how air will go over the car and I put more weight on the front,” Eric revealed.
Second place was taken by Ty Crane and his car, decorated with the phrase “Eat My Dust.” “I put extra weights on the car and I made the wheels ‘slickier’ using lots of glitter stuff,” said Ty.
Third place was taken by Gregory Eugster and his car, named Flowmaster, a.k.a. Superfast. “I put metal on the back of the car and when the air goes over, it comes back and gives it a boost.”
Lunch is provided and the valuable lesson of good sportsmanship is learned by all the participants.
“This is my favorite event of the year,” parent Barbara Drummond said. “We don’t currently have a scout master, so the parents pitch and do all the preparation.”
