YUCCA VALLEY — Three vehicles were involved in a chain reaction traffic collision Wednesday afternoon on Old Woman Springs Road at Buena Suerte Road.
One person was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center and one person was transported to Hi-Desert Medical Center on complaint of back pain. Both patients were immobilized on back boards with collars as a precautionary measure, San Bernardino County Fire Capt. Mark Faulkner said after returning to the station.
The collision was called in to Yucca Valley police at 4:50 p.m. after a vehicle was stopped, waiting to make a legal left turn southbound at Buena Suerte Road. Three vehicles stacked up behind the first vehicle, causing major damage, including a Jeep on its side, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Detective Busto.
Joe LaDuca, who lives nearby, heard the collision and ran down to the winding road to see if assistance was needed. LaDuca, who has had medical training, said he crawled in the broken passenger side rear window of the Jeep to offer assistance to a woman who was trapped in the vehicle.
Arriving firefighter/paramedics broke out the windshield to extricate the patient.
Initial investigation suggests speed and inattention to the road may be factors contributing to the collision.
