Rock out at 43rd annual gem and mineral show

Mary Trenkle witht he Shadow Mountain Gem and Mineral Society is selling off some of her personal collection at the Gem and Mineral show.

JOSHUA TREE — The Gem, Mineral and Craft Show is back for its 43rd year in the Morongo Basin with new vendors and a new selection of rocks and gems for collectors and crafters alike.

The show, hosted by the Joshua Tree Sportsman’s Club, brings together rough rock and mineral specimens, crystals, precious gemstones, millions of beads and fine jewelry.

“We have raw materials for crafters and jewelry makers but also finished products for collectors,” said Sportsman Wayne Hamilton. “There’s something for everyone.”

Over 60 dealers will be set up at indoor and outdoor areas at the Sportsman’s Club throughout the weekend.

“We have about five or six new vendors and our old vendors have a lot of new stuff to show so there will be a ton of new goods,” Hamilton said.

Vendors include local favorites like the JT Rock Shop along with other collectors and dealers from down the hill.

Members from the Shadow Mountain Gem and Mineral Society are selling off pieces from their personal collections and also have collected discovery packs for children. Stop by their booth to pick up a pack and learn about the kinds of rocks and gems that can be spotted in the desert.

Check out the Rabco Mining booth to open up a geode for only $5. This activity is a kid favorite and show attendees can help children learn about the formation of their geodes. They are also selling Mexican agate, processed gems and more.

The event is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and Sunday. Food is offered for sale and tonight there will be a vendors dinner and silent auction. Tickets are on sale at the event for $15.
