Kathryn Joanne Schweitzer, known to her family and friends as Joanne and to some family as Jodi, passed peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2019, with family at her side. She was 88 years old, just missing her next birthday by less than a month.
Kathryn was predeceased by her parents, Charles Anthony and Margaret Bessie Sherr, her husband, Clete Schweitzer, two brothers, Charles Sherr and R. Kearney, and two sisters, Nancy, who died in infancy, and Margaret “Peggy.”
She was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and began her career in physical therapy in Pennsylvania. She attended schools in Lancaster, Ursinus College and the University of Pennsylvania School of Physical Therapy. She eventually, bravely relocated to California as a young woman and continued as a physical therapist in the Palm Springs area until her retirement about 20 years ago. It was in California where she met her husband.
She is survived by one brother, Dr. Richard Sherr, and his wife, Carole, one sister, Judith, and her husband, Joe Peffley, Peggy’s husband, Bill Hart, and Kearney’s wife, Carol, along with many nieces and nephews, grand and great. She also had six stepchildren with Clete: Barbara, Mark, Phil, Connie, Beth and Pat, and several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.
Her friends in Yucca Valley and around the area will miss her dearly, as they had a tight community and watched out for each other like family. Her dear friend Charlene has lovingly adopted Kathryn’s dog. She was adored by all who knew her, and her happy-go-lucky attitude was infectious.
There will be a memorial service at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8, at the Yucca Valley United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, Kathryn would love if you made a donation to the Yucca Valley United Methodist Church, as she was an avid church-goer.
