Kenneth John Moats lived in California his entire life of 89 years, and spent his last 34 years as a resident of Joshua Tree.
Ken was surrounded by his family and passed away peacefully on June 26, 2019.
The son of John and Margaret Moats, he was born Oct. 3, 1929, and was raised in Huntington Beach.
He graduated from Huntington Beach High School and then Orange Coast College, where he played baseball. As the catcher, he was also the team captain and Athlete of the Year. Earning a scholarship to continue his love of baseball, he then graduated from UCLA.
Ken married in 1950 and settled in Huntington Beach, enjoying a long and successful career as a teacher and coach.
Following his retirement from high school teaching, he moved to Joshua Tree in 1986, and continued to teach at Copper Mountain College until 2008.
As a member of Skyview Chapel Church of God, he was elected to the Board of Deacons and served as chairman for many years.
He enjoyed sports of all kinds, four grandchildren, David Moats, Aaron Moats, John Moats and Jenny Moats Zeller, and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 10, at Skyview Chapel Church of God at 7475 Sunny Vista Lane in Joshua Tree. A graveside service will follow at Joshua Tree Memorial Park.
