Major Daniel Allen Henry, 71

Daniel Allen Henry was known as a “Mustang” in the United States Marine Corps, one of those rare individuals who served as an enlisted Marine, a warrant officer and a commissioned officer, ultimately reaching the rank of major.

Major Daniel Allen Henry, a retired Marine of 27 years and long-term resident of Twentynine Palms, passed away on May 17, 2019, after a five-month battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 71 years old.

The Houston native and oldest son of Russell Thaddeus Henry and Annabelle Marie Jenkins Henry, was born on Oct. 28, 1947. After graduating from Jake Yates High School in Houston, Texas, Henry enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1965. He was 17 years old. Henry graduated Platoon Honorman, Series Honorman, and received the Blues Award from boot camp.

Henry was a natural Marine and born leader. Promotions came steadily. He was known as a “Mustang” in the United States Marine Corps, one of those rare individuals who served as an enlisted Marine, a warrant officer and a commissioned officer, ultimately reaching the rank of major. He was promoted 11 times during his tenure in the Corps. He retired as a supply officer from the Marine Corps in 1992. During his career, Henry had many deployments, to include a tour in Vietnam.

After the Marine Corps, Henry went on to work an additional 19 years in Civil Service both in Barstow and later aboard the Marine Corps base in 29 Palms. He completely retired in 2011.

Daniel Henry married his junior high school sweetheart in 1966. Pattie J. Wiley was the love of his life. They were married for 52 years. She was holding his hand when he passed. They had two children, Ramanda Stepp, of 29 Palms, and Daniel Henry Jr., of Fullerton.

His mother, Annabelle Henry, of Houston, Texas; his father, Russell Thaddeus Henry, of Houston, Texas; and his brother, Russell Thomas Henry, of Houston, Texas, preceded Major Daniel Allen Henry in death. He is survived by his wife, Pattie J. Henry; daughter Ramanda Stepp and spouse Jay Stepp; son Daniel Henry Jr. and spouse Monica Henry; sister Janet Marie Gary; and three grandchildren, Hunter Stepp, Miles Henry and Jackson Henry.
