from the past

On a sunny afternoon of the sixth of August 1945, I delivered the Tulsa Tribune on my bike with the headline of the atom-bombing of Hiroshima, and three days later; of Nagasaki. We didn’t care about the 100,000 men, women, children, grannies and babies we had roasted alive in nuclear hellfire. We hated the Japanese — all of them.

On a sweltering day of the second of September, the headline was, “V-J Day!” (Victory in Japan), in huge type. I cried out, “The war is over! The war is over! and we went wild with joy.

Six years later, on a cold gray winter day, a young American sailor walked the silent gray streets of Nagasaki, bulldozed out of the gray rubble of the destroyed city. Nearby an elderly Japanese couple stood transfixed, staring at the ruins as the old woman clutched her black shawl about her. The sailor still sees her gray stricken face.

Seventy years later, on this clear January day in 2018, nuclear weapons are locked on to every city, of any size, all over the planet, while mad narcissistic men (and a couple of women) bluster, threaten and boast about the size of their buttons of annihilation. Indeed, a baby born on this beautiful day could witness the end of time.

Do you understand why I am grasping at straws?

Sorry about the garbled mess below! My PC seems to have a mind of its own.
It froze up while I was making corrections and I found no way to fix it except to close the internet connection which apparently caused my unfinished comment to post. I think you got the idea though.

Freein't freet it's still dear to a great many of us.

What would YOU do about the thin ice Little Rocket Man has placed his country on? Do you not think it fair to warn him of his folly? Or, i threaten?

No I do not understand. Why are you "grasping for straws"?
