Prevent future conflicts of interest

It’s too late to clean up the mess surrounding then-Senator Jeff Sessions’ meetings with Russian diplomatic gadfly Sergey Kislyak, but it could be avoided in the future by prohibiting sitting members of Congress from being official presidential candidate surrogates.

The conflicts of interest alone are destructive to the constituents in Sessions’ state, especially to those who did not vote him into office and who did not vote for Trump; he represents them, too, and they have the right to his undivided attention to what is good for Alabama. We don’t even know yet if Sessions was paid for his Trump campaign work.

However, the exposure of U.S. foreign and domestic policy inner workings for the use of a presidential candidate should be alarming. And in the case of the Trump campaign/presidency and Trump’s family financial and diplomatic conflicts, the prohibition of Sessions’ involvement would have eliminated many untoward opportunities for grift or the appearance thereof.

Under such a prohibition, if Sessions wanted to stump for Trump and angle for a political reward for that loyalty, he would have resigned as senator to pursue those aims. Otherwise, he could have cheered from the sidelines and kept his distance. As it is, he used his office as a prop for the campaign.

While I’m at it, Senator Rand Paul, who likes to parade himself as above the swamp, pressured his state lawmakers to change requirements that would have prohibited him from running for two offices concurrently. Instead, he got to run his vanity project and when that failed he could still run to keep his day job,“fighting for the people of Kentucky.”

The secret meeting between Attorney General Lynch and Hillary Clinton's husband Bill certainly would not pose a conflict of interest to some such as the last commenter. Loretta Lynch did not recuse herself from the investigation. There were no special prosecutor assigned. Her cronies in the Justice Department and the FBI did what they were hired to do. That was no accidental meeting. But if you are a Hillary supporter that kind of thinking is acceptable. If it happened to anyone else it would be a scandal. It is and will always be a much bigger scandal than Jeff Sessions meeting the Russian Ambassador along with all those other Democrats who have lied about meeting the same ambassador. The stench of Hypocrisy runs deep in those who claim otherwise. I would guess Obama had a scandal free eight years and you would believe that. That meeting between Bill and Loretta Lynch was just one of many scandals that happened during the Obama administration.

Bill Clinton wasn't being investigated by the Justice Dept. when he glad-handed with Atty Gen Loretta Lynch on the tarmac. But Lynch recused herself from anything to do with investigating Mrs. Bill Clinton.

maybe be ought to have some kind of law that keep those who are being investigated by the justice department from meeting the attorney general like bill clinton did with Loretta lynch. guess that was okay. but the other thing you want to call a conflict of interest and should be dealt with severely. makes sense. yea right.
