The Hi-Desert Chorus, made up of singers from all over the Basin, has performed twice a year for many years. The most recent director is Bill Barrett, the music director at Yucca Valley High School. He is very busy, with two choirs, a symphonic band, a marching band and a jazz band, some of which compete with other groups in Southern California. Some years ago, he also took on the challenge of directing the Hi-Desert Chorus for two concerts a year.

His busy schedule at Yucca Valley High School led to his cutting back with the Hi-Desert Chorus to only one concert a year. I was very privileged to be singing this year for the concert of multi-seasonal music on Dec. 9 and 10 at the Yucca Valley Community Center.

The concert was well-attended and enjoyed by both the singers and the attendees. Our talented accompanist, Clyde Grabski, was also the composer of several beautiful pieces.

Mr. Barrett arranged the program to include Yucca Valley High School’s Select Choir. We were all awed by the beautiful sound of the two songs they sang and delighted to have them add their voices to ours for two other songs.

This group of 45 high school students is now in the process of raising funds for a trip to Washington, D.C., where they will sing outside near the Capitol and will take part in musical workshops at nearby colleges that have excellent music programs. They need a lot of money to do this and have already done some fundraisers; more are coming. So please watch for them and help out in any way you can. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our talented teens.
