Wow! I must say that I am truly impressed with the Copper Mountain College’s men’s basketball team called the Fighting Cacti. The last I read, their overall record was 16 wins and only six losses! (Not bad for a new team.)

Where did these young men come from? They are not only fantastic athletes, but they play with a lot of heart and to be the first team in the first basketball season in the history of Copper Mountain College is really a wonder to behold!

It is taking me a while to get used to their mascot name, the Fighting Cacti, because I thought it was a joke at first, but I’m liking it more and more as time goes on. I’m not laughing now.

I’m sure that the players in the teams that they play at first think that they must be a joke too. However, anyone can see that they are not a joke, and that they are for real, and they are proving that in every game that they play. Maybe, just maybe, that name has made them a little tougher than they would have been with a more conventional name. It’s like Johnny Cash’s song, “A Boy Named Sue,” where the dad gave his boy that name (Sue) to make him toughen up because he knew that other boys would tease him about his name. Another example: running back Todd Gurley of the LA Rams, who is in my opinion the best back in pro football today, but can you imagine how he was teased growing up with a name like Gurley? Well, no one’s teasing him today, because he’s one tough dude!

And the Fighting Cacti are getting tougher and tougher with each game they play and I give a lot of the credit to their coach too for their success. (He’s doing something right!)

I only wish the Morongo Basin would come out and support them better at the Bell Center.

Go Fighting Cacti!
