The Lady Trojan softball team takes fourth league title

TWENTYNINE PALMS — The Yucca Valley High School varsity softball team took its fourth league championship in a row Thursday by beating the Twentynine Palms Wildcats 7-2.

The Trojans end the season 13-1 in the new Desert Valley League, where they tied with Banning for first place.

Twentynine Palms ended in fourth at 8-6.

Senior Haley Smith got the win for the Trojans. She struck out 11 Wildcats and surrendered two runs on three hits over seven innings. No one got a walk on her.

Twentynine Palms pitcher Kaitlyn Steffins allowed five hits and seven runs while striking out five.

Junior Makayla Geeson went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Trojans in hits.

For the Wildcats, freshman Hailee Jenkins and sophomores Jaelyn Hannan and Isabella Salcido collected hits and Mya Chacon and Gianna Bilderain scored.

The Trojans will have a certain spot in the CIF Southern Section Division 5 playoffs. Brackets will be released Monday.
