DESERT HOT SPRINGS — It was senior Dutch DeMeo who put the dagger into the hearts of the Golden Eagles as he hit six straight free throws at the end of the game to give the Trojan boys basketball team a 56-51 win Friday night.
"It was so cool," coach Joel Geeson said. "Desert Hot Springs mounted a late surge in the fourth quarter and they had to foul. They picked the wrong player. Dutch stepped to the line six times in the last minute and with the hometown fans going wild trying to rattle him, he just kept making every foul shot to put a mark in the win column for us. It was unbelievable how cool he was under the pressure."
The Trojans led 24-21 at halftime and were ahead by 7 at the end of the third quarter.
"The difference was our team free throwing," Geeson said. "We went only 5-15 in the first half, but hit 15 of 22 in the second half. The Eagles were a very physical team and then they had to foul," concluded the Trojan coach.
DeMeo finished the game with 20 points and five assists. Tanner Littrell scored 12 and grabbed nine rebounds and Alex Hill also had nine rebounds to go with 6 points.
