YUCCA VALLEY — The Yucca Valley High School marching band and color guard are gearing up for semifinals competition after an impressive weekend of back-to-back competitions on Saturday, one at Riverside City College and one at San Gorgonio High School.
The team placed third in their division at Riverside and took an overall win in their division at San Gorgonio, where the color guard also took first place and the drum line placed second.
The wins will move the team into the semifinals seeded 11th.
“We knew that this year was going to be a challenge because we lost a lot of strong players last year,” said marching band director Bill Barrett. “But the team has been dedicated to practice and training all season.”
The team will compete in the semifinals Saturday at Capistrano High School in Mission Viejo for a chance to move into the finals the following week. They will be competing against 24 other schools in their division, 3A, which includes teams of 51-70 members.
Thirteen teams will move on to the finals and at the 11th position, the team is hopeful that they will move to the next round.
“I’m very proud of our team,” said Barrett. “We’ve made it to the finals every other year for at least the past 10 years and we’re in a good position to do that again this year.”
