YUCCA VALLEY — The Yucca Valley High School track and field team split up last weekend, sending the distance runners to Azusa Pacific University for the Distance Meet of Champions and the rest of the team to Beaumont for an invitational.
At the distance meet, sophomore Elijah Ocegueda ran one of the fastest times in the 800 meters in school history: 1:59.09. This earned him second place in the freshman/sophomore division.
Sophomore Loryn Brimhall ran the 1600 meters early in what coach Jay Stepp called an extraordinary time of 5:15. This is a top 100 time in California this year.
She also set a new school record in the 800 meters with a time of 2:19.29.
Over in Beaumont, the Trojan field athletes also had a great meet. Bo Platt placed second in the freshman/sophomore shot put competition and second in discus.
Haley Jackson also placed fourth in shot put and second in discus.
Up next, the team will host their first and only home meet of the season Wednesday, against Cathedral City and Desert Hot Springs. The meet will start at 3:15 p.m.
