YUCCA VALLEY — The Thacher Toads jumped on Joshua Springs miscues to defeat the Lightning football team 38-30 at home Friday night, Sept. 28.
Coach Israel Hagerman’s team turned the ball over on fumbles four times in the first half and the opportunistic visitors used three of them to score 22 points.
The Toads led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Joshua Springs scored its first touchdown on a Ryan Green pass to Joseph Leichtner at the 11:30 mark of the second quarter, which was a role reversal for Green and Leichtner, as Green is usually on the receiving end of quarterback Leichtner’s passes.
The half ended with the Lightning in a hole 38-22.
In the second half, the Lightning held onto the ball and the Joshua Springs defense stiffened, holding the Toads scoreless.
Green had to fill in at quarterback for Leichtner in the second half, as with only 15 seconds left in the first half, Leichtner broke up the middle on a keeper and was thrown off balance by a Toad tackler.
Leichtner stumbled forward, twisting, and sustained what appeared to be a leg injury. The senior quarterback did not return to action.
There was no report on the nature or severity of Leichtner’s injury post-game.
