YUCCA VALLEY — The Yucca Valley High School varsity volleyball squad dropped a match against the La Quinta Blackhawks Monday, Sept. 10, in Trojan gym.

The girls lost their first two sets, 15-25 and 6-25. The Lady Trojans mounted a comeback in the third set, at times edging ahead of the Blackhawks. In the end, however, the visitors’ ball-handling experience proved too much for the younger team and the Trojans lost, 20-25.

Leading the Trojans were junior Chelsea Mondary, going 11 of 12 from the serving line, and senior Melissa Smith with seven digs, coach Matt Jennings said.

The junior varsity team fell to La Quinta, 0-2.

Saturday, the varsity team traveled to San Bernadino for the Desert Classic Tournament. The Lady Trojans went 2-1 in pool play, defeating Bloomington Christian and Upland Christian and losing to Diamond Ranch.

Yucca Valley made it into the Gold Division and lost in the first round to St. Paul High School.

“Overall, a very good day for them,” Jennings said. “The team is really coming together and the tournament experience was a great help.”
