CMC takes huge half-time lead in home opener

Anthony Rice pushes past a pair Barstow defenders for a layup. Rice was the top scorer for his team with 23 points.

JOSHUA TREE — The Fighting Cacti didn’t disappoint their fans at their home opener Wednesday night at the Bell Center. The Copper Mountain College’s men’s basketball team beat the Barstow Community College Vikings 96-83.

Great pressure defense and the hot shooting of sophomore point guard Anthony Rice propelled the Fighting Cacti to a big 56-30 lead going into the half.

Barstow made a second-half push to narrow the gap, but could never narrow the score to anything less than a double-digit deficit.

Great play from freshman guard Will Valsien helped CMC sustain the lead.

Anthony Rice led CMC scoring with 23 points and 11 assists, Dillon Voyles scored 12 points, freshman Zack Kroker had 12 points and eight rebounds and sophomore big man Darius Davis chipped in 10 points for the Fighting Cacti.

CMC improves to 2-2 on the year and are set for a big-time home match Friday in Joshua Tree as they host the top-20 nationally-ranked Arizona Western at 5 p.m.
