TWENTYNINE PALMS — The father of two players on the Twentyine Palms High School boys varsity basketball team confirmed Tuesday, Jan. 29, that several players briefly quit the team in the wake of coach T.J. Stanford’s resignation.

“Abraham and Adam quit the team but they went back,” Rickey Bell said. “I talked both of them into going back.

“The went back finally after a two-day hiatus.”

Other players who briefly quit the team, he said, included Jordan Toa, Tyree Harrison and Bryton Williams.

“They all quite the team in support of coach Stanford,” he said. “We want coach Stanford back.”

A player walkout left interim coach Antoine Kilgore with a seven-man roster going up against Desert Mirage at home Friday, Jan. 26.

Just before a practice at the school Tuesday afternoon, Kilgore confirmed that several of his player quit briefly but have returned to the team.

Rickey Bell said he has gone to Morongo Unified School District officials speaking on behalf of Stanford, who claimed he has been the subject of harassment by the parent of one of his players.

“I talked to Mr. Baumgarten yesterday,” he said, referring to Superintendent Tom Baumgarten. He said he also spoke to board of education member Karalee Hargrove but complained that his words have fallen on deaf ears.

“Nobody is listening,” he said.

“I don’t think it’s fair that he be bullied out,” he said.

“He did not quit, he was forced to resign because of his statement there,” he said. “I can’t let this happen, that’s why I want to give you my side of the story. To uproot this man in the middle of the season, that is not right.”

He said he has contacted Congressman Paul Cook and may contact Gov. Jerry Brown.

“I ain’t letting this go,” he said. “My next step will be to go as high as I can.”

“I met with Mr. Bell and met with Mr. Stanford,” Superintendent Tom Baumgarten said by telephone Wednesday morning, Jan. 31. “Hopefully moving forward we can continue to have a successful basketball team.

He added that he would not comment on the suggestion that Bell’s concerns fell on deaf ears at the district.

Ironic. Just look around at all the bullying education the schools do, only to turn around and do it themselves. hypocrisy.know no bounds

Accountability is hard to come by in a two bit dusty h hole like 29 palms yucky valley. VOTE hem out. Then vote for educated outsiders, not the inbred nepotism crew that is there now. Was this man an employee? get an attorney.
