WONDER VALLEY — Paintings and burkas join forces for the latest exhibition at the Glass Outhouse, Twentynine Palms Highway and Thunder Road.

The new exhibit, featuring works by Joy Leininger and Suzanne Ross, will run through March 25. It was celebrated by a reception Saturday, Feb. 3, featuring food and the music of Luminators Mark Ross and Paul Gerkin.

Leininger’s work includes large oil paintings of scenes from the area of Los Angeles where she lives.

“This is the bike path I take,” she said, pointing at one work.

She said she likes to feature motion in her work.

“I am an elementary school teacher so I never had a lot of time to paint,” she said. “It’s a great way to get away from people.”

She added that she has been retired from teaching for five years.

Her journey to becoming a featured artist at the Glass Outhouse began with the HWY 62 Art Tours and her friendship with Almut Fleck, who lives in Wonder Valley, who told her she had to see the Glass Outhouse gallery.

It continued when she and her husband, Michael, went to the gallery and he insisted she sign up. She did so, knowing there was a three-year waiting list, which would give her a lot of time to get a show ready.

“All of a sudden three years came up and I had to be here and put names on things that didn’t have names,” she said.

Like Leininger’s work, all of Ross’ works are for sale. The difference is all of Ross’ work has the same price tag, $99.

She said she is looking to clear out storage space.

She noted that the work in the exhibition have been seen at other shows in the Morongo Basin and elsewhere.

“This is from an even earlier show, in Buffalo, New York,” she said of one piece.

The pieces are made from cotton fiber.

“I make them just like paper,” she said. “But I take the water out.”

Her work also features found objects.
