TWENTYNINE PALMS — A GoFundMe campaign, launched in the wake of the death of 18-year-old Marine Becket Kiernan, of Rochester, Massachusetts, raised $1,200 in less than a day. The goal is to raise $2,000.

According to a report in the Boston Globe, Kiernan was on his first assignment as a Marine when he died suddenly on Sunday, Feb. 4, at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs.

He died eight hours after he was diagnosed with a flesh-eating disease.

In 21 hours, 24 people donated to the fund in memory of the member of India Company, who was stationed on board the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center.

The fund was started by Amy Salvadore.

According to the GoFundMe site, Kiernan joined the Marine Corps Dec. 1, 2017.

“Becket wanted to be a MARINE since he was little, his whole life was built around helping others, and I know he would have been a STELLAR MARINE,” the site quotes Kiernan’s mother, Lynda Kiernan, as saying.

“My heart tells me that as long as his fellow MARINES remember him, he will go with them in their adventures.”

In an interview with television station WPRI, Lynda Kiernan reported that she got a call Feb. 4, telling her that what had been diagnosed as the flu was something more serious and that she needed to immediately fly to California.

She added through tears that she did not make it in time to say goodbye to her son.
