TWENTYNINE PALMS — After some delays, Morongo Basin Relay For Life has found a home and a day and time.

This year’s fundraiser for the American Cancer Society will be held from noon to midnight Saturday, May 5, at Tom Nicoll Memorial Stadium, Two Mile Road and Utah Trail.

Thus far seven teams have signed on to take part in the 12-hour walk-a-thon which will see teams pledge to keep at least one member on the track during the entire 12 hour fundraiser.

“We are excited that we already have several teams signed up and working toward our goal,” Event Lead Diane Durden said Tuesday afternoon.

Organizers are hoping to raise $50,000, to help the American Cancer Society fund cancer research and programs on behalf of those fighting cancer and their caregivers.

As of Tuesday, Feb. 13, participants had raised more than $795.

“We need more teams,” Durden said, urging potential participants to register by going online to

“In addition to teams and participants we encourage all cancer survivors to register for this event so we may honor them, not just during the relay but all year.”

Committee members are working to fill the event with music, games and other diversions to keep participants and supporters engaged, Durden said.

“The planning team is working hard to create a festive and entertaining event, fun for all ages,” she said.

Organizers, she said, are also looking for business sponsors who have the option of making financial or in-kind donations.
