Gary Lee Wilson, a 77-year resident of California and a 40-year resident of Joshua Tree, died of heart failure Jan. 21, 2018, in his home. He was 77 years old.

Gary was born in San Diego and served in the Army for three years.

He loved restoring old cars.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Wilson, and his sister, Lauretta Hall.

Gary is survived by his daughter, Laura, of Twentynine Palms, his daughter-in-law, Debra, of Joshua Tree, his grandson, Adam, of Hesperia, and his granddaughter, Danielle, of Sacramento.

Gary Wilson could normally be identified by his bib overalls and his ancient blue Dodge Dart automobile. Known generally for his gruff demeanor, Gary was regarded by his many loyal friends as a generous man with a special sarcastic brand of humor.

Gary worked for the Joshua Basin Water District for several years as a heavy equipment operator. He loved to tell stories of his adventures and misadventures. To this day, he is well regarded for his legendary memory of where water pipes and equipment are buried. He ended his service to the district by serving for nine years on the board of directors.

Gary died peacefully at his home with his loving daughter-in-law, Debra Pope at his bedside, who provided his in-home care for the last two weeks of his life.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 3 at Joshua Tree Memorial Park, 60121 Twentynine Palms Highway in Joshua Tree, followed by a graveside service.
