Sidney B. Jones (98), of Twentynine Palms (the last 15 years), passed into the arms of the Lord peacefully while he slept in the early hours of Nov. 11, 2018. Very fitting for this U.S. Navy submarine veteran who served faithfully in the Navy during World War II and the Vietnam Era conflict.
Sidney entered the U.S. Navy Sept. 25, 1939, serving initially on the battleship USS NY (BB-34). After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Sidney was granted sub school, and eventually assigned to the USS Permit (SS-178), a porpoise class P-5 submarine out of Vallejo. Surviving eight war patrols, including a three-day depth charging of the boat during a “wolf pack” scouting expedition, Sid rose to the position of Chief of the Boat, and a rank of Chief Petty Officer, gunners mate.
Discharged in October 1945, Sidney returned to New Jersey, married and eventually moved to Riverhead, New York, where he joined the Navy Reserves.
Sidney worked as a plumber, well driller, professional photographer and a pipe fitter at Brookhaven National Laboratory, rejoining the U.S. Navy active duty in September 1972, serving as a recruiter until September 1981.
Sidney moved to the West Coast in April of 1987, and Twentynine Palms in 2003 where he loved being an amateur (ham) radio operator, a grandpa and great-grandpa, and enjoyed bowling in his church’s league as well as the occasional fishing and sightseeing trips.
Sidney was born in 1920 to David Clennendon and Grace (Bley) Jones in Wilkensburg, Pennsylvania.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Caroline (Orlosky), his second wife, Evelyn G. (Teel), his daughter Susan DiCicco, and his brother David C. Jones.
Sidney is survived by his wife Clara Rowland; his daughters Nancy (Ron) Maloney, Grace (Cary) Wallis, Judith (Juan Carlos Carrillo) Jones, Gloria, Faith (Jeff) Arwick and Beth Jones (Rob Heer) Lowery; 17 grandchildren: Caroline, Mark (Amy) and Jennifer Phillips, Kimberly (Hastings) Berg, Wm. Hastings III, Sarah (Justin) McKay, Rebekah Wallis, Deborah (Charles) Horn, Timothy (Destiny) Wallis, Jeramiah (Trish) Halcomb, April Halcomb, Paul Halcomb and Zakk Arwick, Justin Lowery, Sydney (Brian) Nelson, Amber (Fritzgy) Joseph, and Megan Lowery; 15 (soon to be 16) great-grandchildren; and David Phillips.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at Oasis Community Church, 6631 Utah Trail, Twentynine Palms, CA 92277. Interment will be at Joshua Tree Memorial Park.
