TWENTYNINE PALMS — The Twentynine Palms High School boys junior varsity and varsity basketball teams beat their Central High School counterparts at home Wednesday, Nov. 28.
The junior varsity squad, led by juniors Khari Applewhite with 13 points and four steals, Trey Crump with nine points and Izaiah Leopoldo with 11 points and five steals, beat the Spartans 62-32.
After opening the game with a 16-2 run, the Wildcats opened up a 21-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.
A hard-working Spartans squad kept pace with the Wildcats, but could not cut into the home team’s lead, until the fourth quarter when the Wildcats outscored their opponents 13-4 to close out the win.
The victory gave the junior varsity squad a 1-1 record.
A strong defensive performance and 60 percent shooting helped the varsity Wildcats beat their Spartan counterparts 81-61.
Junior Jaylen Bradberry paced the team with 25 points, eight rebounds and five turnovers as did seniors Tarion Napolean with 15 points, five steals, and three turnovers and Neolani Bullion with 12 points, eight rebounds, and two turnovers.
“They were a solid team,” Head Coach Michael Usher said of the Spartans. “They had good guard play and several good shooters. We did a great job containing them and limiting them to one shot, but I think they will have a solid season.”
