TWENTYNINE PALMS — The Twentynine Palms High School boys basketball teams earned three victories over the Banning Brancos at home in the first game of the Desert Valley League season.
The frosh soph team beat Banning 59-23 in a game where every player scored. The Wildcats were led by freshman Jeremiah Holmes with 21 points, 12 rebounds and seven steals, followed by freshman Aiden Sullivan with eight points and seven rebounds.
The junior varsity squad beat the Broncos 54-28. Sophomore Izaiah Leopoldo led the team with 16 points and three rebounds with sophomore Josh Herne scoring nine. The junior varsity Wildcats move to 3-2 on the season.
The varsity squad beat the Broncos 66-47.
After a slow first quarter, the team bounced back behind a 21 point, 11 rebound performance by junior Jaylan Bradberry, and a 12 point, eight rebound night from junior Troy Tuivaiti.
The Wildcats improve to 3-2 on the season, and 1-0 in the Desert Valley League. The teams next game is Thursday on the road at Coachella Valley.
The varsity team bounced back Saturday with a 97-64 victory against the West Valley Mustangs.
The Wildcats were led by sophomore guard Jacob Hueso with 18 points and four steals, junior Jaylen Bradberry with 15 points and eight rebounds, and senior guard Tarion Napoleon with 17 points, three assists and four steals.
The Twentynine Palms High School boys junior varsity and varsity basketball teams beat their Central High School counterparts at home Wednesday, Nov. 28.
The junior varsity squad, led by juniors Khari Applewhite with 13 points and four steals, Trey Crump with nine points and Izaiah Leopoldo with 11 points and five steals, beat the Spartans 62-32.
After opening the game with a 16-2 run, the Wildcats opened up a 21-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.
A hard-working Spartans squad kept pace with the Wildcats, but could not cut into the home team’s lead, until the fourth quarter when the Wildcats outscored their opponents 13-4 to close out the win.
The victory gave the junior varsity squad a 1-1 record.
A strong defensive performance and 60 percent shooting helped the varsity Wildcats beat their Spartan counterparts 81-61.
Junior Jaylen Bradberry paced the team with 25 points, eight rebounds and five turnovers as did seniors Tarion Napolean with 15 points, five steals, and three turnovers and Neolani Bullion with 12 points, eight rebounds, and two turnovers.
“They were a solid team,” Head Coach Michael Usher said of the Spartans. “They had good guard play and several good shooters. We did a great job containing them and limiting them to one shot, but I think they will have a solid season.”
